Understanding the UK GHIC and EHIC: What You Need to Know Before Travelling to Europe

When planning a trip to Europe, it’s easy to focus on flights, hotels, and all the exciting things to do once you arrive. But there’s one travel essential many forget about – healthcare cover.

The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) and the UK European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) are vital tools for travellers. They offer access to necessary state-provided healthcare in most European countries, either at a reduced cost or sometimes free of charge. This includes treatment for unexpected illnesses or accidents that occur during your trip – the kind of things you can’t predict but definitely want to be prepared for.

What’s the Difference?

If you still have a valid UK EHIC (issued before the end of 2020), you can continue using it until it expires. Once it does, or if you’re applying for the first time, you’ll need to apply for the UK GHIC. Both cards serve the same basic purpose: to give you access to essential medical care while travelling in the EU.

Important Things to Know:

  • These cards are not a substitute for travel insurance. They won’t cover private medical care or things like mountain rescue or repatriation, so comprehensive travel insurance is still a must.
  • Application is free – always use the official NHS website. Apply here
  • It’s worth applying well in advance of your holiday, just in case there are any delays in receiving your card.

Final Thought

Travel is about adventure and relaxation – not stress. Making sure you’re covered for healthcare abroad means one less thing to worry about while you’re away. If you’ve got questions about what your GHIC covers or what kind of travel insurance you need, get in touch.
